Guga bows out to Grosjean
posted Wednesday Mar 26, 2008 11:52pm by Andre Jones

Former world number 1 Gustavo Kuerten bowed out of the Sony Ericsson Open for the last time 6-1 7-5 at the hands of Sebastian Grosjean.

The 2000 finalist who lost a memorable four setter to Pete Sampras when both were playing at their peak, is due to retire later this year, probably after the French Open, the scene of his greatest triumphs having won 3 titles there. He nevertheless leaves Miami with fond memories:

"I would say that year I had a great match against Andre (Agassi) in the semifinal", Kuerten said of his run to the final in 2000. "Then playing Pete in the final, that was the first time I had that experience in my life. That day in the final  I remember the atmosphere on the court was really amazing. Not only did we play some great tennis, a match that lasted three or four hours, but people getting involved and really being part of the match. That's what I always enjoy on tennis. For sure it was not only one of the greatest memories for me in this tournament, but in the world."

Since undergoing hip surgery several years ago, the Brazilian has been the shadow of his former self and now is ready to bring down the curtain on a glorious career.

"It's very painful", Kuerten said concerning playing with a less than perfect hip. "To be able to play and perform like the guys, for me it's really difficult. It would be impossible. That's probably the main thing that makes me decide to stop."

Although Kuerten is hopeful to play the Beijing Olympics, he is realistic enough to recognise that his retirement may come much sooner:

"I'm trying for the Olympics. But I think it's going to be hard to get a wild card there, so far I'm still thinking that the French will be my last match. But if I have the chance to be in the Olympics, I think it would be great for me. It would be the third Olympics, and that would be a great accomplishment for myself."

Big serving giant Kevin Anderson gets the dubious privelege of taking on the defending champion Novak Djokovic in round 2 after battling past Agustin Calleri 7-6(5) 3-6 7-6(4). The left-handed South African who is one of the tallest players on tour at 6'8" will have his work cut out against the in-form Serb who is looking to become just the seventh player in history to win back to back Indian Wells and Miami titles.
