Spaniards soar in Stuttgart
posted Friday Jul 20, 2007 01:22pm by Chris Gilbert

2005 champion Rafael Nadal continued to power his way through the draw at the Mercedes Cup in Stuttgart, advancing to the quarterfinals today. The world number two had little trouble against German Philipp Kohlschreiber, beating the local favourite 6-3 6-3 in one hour and 40 minutes.

The next man standing in Nadal's way is Argentine Juan Monaco, with the eight seed knocking out Austrian Stefan Koubek 6-2 3-6 6-3.

Former world number one Juan Carlos Ferrero had a tough victory in his match with Diego Hartfield of Argentina. After winning the first set, Ferrero managed to only win 12 points in the second set, before coming back and taking the match in the final set.

Fellow Spaniard Feliciano Lopez will be Ferrero's next opponent, with Lopez upsetting third seed Tomas Berdych 6-0 6-3. The 25 year old took just 51 minutes to put away Berdych and set up his second career meeting with Ferrero.
