The second day of main draw action in Cincinnati has proved to be a somewhat controversial one, with Russian Anastasia Rodionova being defaulted and fifth seed Aiko Nakamura losing in her first round match to Georgian teenager Anna Tatishvili. The Seventeen year old qualifier who now resides in Florida proved too strong for Nakamura, taking out the fifth seed in a third set tiebreak with a scoreline of 16 64 76.
The tournaments top seed, Anna Chakvetadze survived an early scare after she dropped the first four games of her match against Tatiana Poutchek of Belarus. Chakvetadze, ranked number eight in the world, wasn't going to let this match slip away from her, and she hit back as a first-class player should, going on a lethal run to take every single game and win the match 64 60.
Perhaps the story of the day unfolded though in a bizzare twist of fate when 25 year old Russian Anastasia Rodionova was defaulted in her match against Angelique Kerber. Rodionova, who had just lost the second set and been broken in the first game of the third, was defaulted by tournament referee William Coffey after she hit a ball in the direction of fans who were cheering for her opponent. Although the ball did not hit the fans, she had been deemed to be displaying "unsportsmanlike conduct" and was therefore defaulted. Rodionova, a 2003 Wimbledon Mixed Doubles finalist, was also said to be complaining about the fans earlier in the match, but she remained very confused as to why exactly she was defaulted.
"I'm shocked," Rodionova said. "I still don't understand why they defaulted me. I'm really upset. I've never seen in my life anyone defaulted in this situation. I had no warning. I didn't hit the ball at anybody. I didn't swear at anybody. I didn't throw my racket."
In other day two news, second seed Patty Schnyder and sixth seed Elena Vesnina were among the winners, both taking out their matches with relative ease.
