Top seed and defending champion Tommy Robredo suffered a shock first round loss at the Catella Swedish Open in Bastad. After losing in the second round at Wimbledon, Robredo could not regain his form on his preferred surface of clay, as he went down to Peru's Luis Horna 6-1 1-6 6-1. The win is Horna's ninth career victory over a top ten player.

Robredo wasn't the only seed to fall in day one action, with third seeded Fin Jarkko Nieminen losing to Belgium's pocket rocket Olivier Rochus 6-2 6-4. It wasn't a bad day for all the seeds though, with fourth seeded Carlos Moya  disposing of fellow Spaniard Navarro Pastor in straight sets and  fifth seed Filippo Volandri fighting his way through a tough three setter against Italy's Federico Luzzi.
