Federer equals Wimbledon record after epic encounter
posted Monday Jul 09, 2007 12:20pm by Chris Gilbert

World number one Roger Federer has once again etched his name into the record books after winning an epic five set final against nemisis Rafael Nadal. Federer became only the second man in history to win five consecutive titles, after outlasting Nadal 7-6(7), 4-6, 7-6(3), 2-6, 6-2 in 3 hours and 45 minutes. With Borg, the man who's record Federer was trying to emulate, watching on, the two modern marvels of tennis went to battle in oneof the most entertaining finals of recent years.

After three tight first sets which only saw 3 breaks of serve and 2 tiebreaks, it looked like Federer's time to pass over his crown had come, as he became continously frustrated at his lack of luck in not only play but also with the hawkeye challenge system. Two breaks early in the fourth set gave Nadal a comfortable passage to the fifth set, despite needing attention to his knee mid way through.

The match deserved one last twist and thats what it got when Federer fought back from 15-40 in his first two service games of the deciding set to hold his serve. A disappointed Nadal then lost his next service game due to some brilliant play by Federer, including a sensational forehand on break point which clipped the line.

Federer then took Nadal to duece on his next service game where he gained advantage and just needed to put away an easy volley to clinch the title. An emotional Federer fell to the ground and let out a few tears of joy, realising his name would again be printed on the honour roll of Wimbledon champions.

As always, Federer was all class after the match as he paid tribute to the effort of Nadal, who is still learning his trade on the grass."He's playing phenomenal tennis. He's definitely improved yet again I think. He had more of a game plan this year than he had last year. I think last year he came out, nothing to lose, kind of hit hard but didn't know why. This year around, he's changed his game a little bit. Plays maybe a bit more aggressive, knows the game of grass much better. That's why I think he's not only just a good clay courter, he's a good all-around player."

One who loves the history and tradition of tennis, Federer revealed it was a special day with so many great including Bjorg watching on from the stands. "It was a huge occasion for me, huge pressure. Bjorn Borg sitting there, Jimmy Connors sitting there, John McEnroe sitting there, Boris Becker sitting there. You know, for me it's a big moment for me. Then in the end, to lift the trophy, it's a very, yeah, special memory. I'll have it for all my life," Federer revealed in his post match press conference.

With the win Federer also joins Bjorn Borg and Rod Laver, with 11 grand slam titles, only three short of Pete Sampras' all time record.

Today also saw France's Michael Llorda and Arnaud Clement defeat the Bryan brothers in the men's doubles final while Jamie Murray became the first Briton in 20 years to win a title at the All England Club, partnering Serbia's Jelena Jankovic to defeat Jonas Bjorkman and Alicia Molik in the mixed doubles.
