Fourth-seeded German Angelique Kerber won the title at the US $50,000 Saguenay National Bank Challenger. Kerber, 161st in the WTA rankings, defeated countrymate Sabine Lisicki, ranked 431st, in two sets of 6-3 and 6-4.
"Sabine played much better than what the score indicates" declared the 2007 champion. "Her shots were really heavy and I had a hard time counterattacking . I then adjusted my game by mixing my shots as much as possible and that's when she started making some mistakes, which allowed me to escape with the win."
It is a second straight title at the Saguenay National Bank Challenger for Kerber, who was also the winner of the tournamenr's inagural edition in 2006. "I'm very happy to have won here in Saguenay again this year. I hope the confidence I acquired during the week will help me for the next tournaments I will enter" concluded Kerber.
"Overall, I feel that I played a good match" said Lisicki. "I've had to play difficult matches since the start of the tournament. I often had to come back from behind to win my matches, like the one I played against Stephanie Dubois (she was down 5-2 in the final set and won 7-5), and for that reason I think I was a little tired mentally today. But I give all the credit to Angelique; she played incredible tennis all week long, and especially today."
Kerber also claimed the doubles title Saturday alongside Romanian partner Agnes Szatmari.
