Borg returns to UK grass
posted Friday Jan 12, 2007 02:03pm by BBC Sport

Bjorn Borg is to play on grass in the UK for the first time since his 1981 Wimbledon final loss to John McEnroe.

The 50-year-old Swede, who won five straight titles in SW19, will take part in this year's Liverpool International tennis tournament from 12-17 June.

Event director Anders Borg said: "It's fantastic Bjorn has agreed to play. We hope to see once again some of Borg's tennis genius and sparkle."

He will feature in a doubles match on 13 June and a singles match on 15 June.

Borg received a Lifetime Achievement award at the 2006 BBC Sports Personality Awards in December.

As well as his Wimbledon titles, he won six French Open crowns before retiring in 1983 at the age of 26.

The Liverpool International event, now in its sixth year, serves as a warm-up to Wimbledon, which begins on 25 June.

It features a mixture of current players and stars of the past from both the men's and women's game.

Previous tournaments at Calderstone's Park have attracted Goran Ivanisevic, Pat Cash, Ilie Nastase, Henri Leconte and Martina Navratilova.
