Gael Monfils hopes of adding to his solitary ATP title won in Sopot in 2005 was dashed today by German qualifier Philipp Petzschner 6-4 6-4, becoming the third qualifier this year to win a title.
Petzschner, who will move into the top 100 for the first time at 72 from his current position of 125 got the decisive break of serve at 4-4 in the first set to wrap it up in 42 minutes, bamboozling the athletic Frenchman with a mixture of no pace sliced backhands and howitzer forehands, not to mention enterprising sorties to the net which often ended with clinical drop volley winners.
The 8th seeded Monfils who will enter the top 20 at 18 - his highest ranking to date, was powerless to stop the enigmatic German from picking up his first ATP title after once again dropping serve at 4-4 in the second set.
Petzschner is the first qualifier to win the Vienna title since Belgian Filip Dewulf famously defeated home favourite Thomas Muster back in 1995.
