Hapless Almagro self destructs
posted Wednesday Sep 10, 2008 02:14pm by Andre Jones

A grumpy Nicolas Almagro had one of his off days at the office where he could barely do anything right as he slumped to a 6-4 7-5 defeat at the hands of compatriot Guillermo Garcia-Lopez.

The disgruntled third seed who was beaten by Garcia-Lopez in 5 sets at Wimbledon, lost the 43 minute opening set courtesy of a break of serve at 4-4 as he hit a backhand long.

After squandering a 0-40 opportunity to break for 2-0 in the second set, the tempestuous Almagro hit a ball out of court with fury to earn himself a warning from the umpire for ball abuse.

Although Almagro managed to delay inevitable defeat by saving a break point in the ninth game with a simple backhand pass off a poor drop shot, the hot-headed Spaniard duly obliged at 5-5 by spraying a careless forehand wide.

Garcia-Lopez served out the match to love in the next game, clinching victory with an ace.
