Cypriot Marcos Baghdatis was in impressive form today as he reached his best ever result in Canada by beating Spanish veteran Carlos Moya. A first round loser in last year's Roger Masters, Baghdatis won a first set tiebreak to take the set and eventually the match 7-6(7) 6-1. After losing the tiebreak in which he had 5 set points, Moya started off the second set with little confidence, losing 19 of the first 21 points.
Another young gun of the ATP, the ever improving Novak Djokovic, became the first player to advance to the third round, with the Serb dismissing German Nicolas Keifer 6-3, 6-3.
Today also saw Mario Ancic make his return to the tour, after missing most of the year due to mononucleosis. The Croat took little time to find his old form either, sending local hopeful Frederic Niemeyer packing 6-4 6-2.
Another player returning this tournament was Andy Murray, who was forced out of both Roland Garros and Wimbledon with a wrist injury. Like Ancic, Murray quickly settled back into the winner's circle with a 6-4 6-4 triumph over Robby Ginepri.
It wasn't a bad day for all the Americans though, with ninth seed James Blake holding on in a tight 7-5 7-6(4) win over Austrain Jurgen Melzer. The ninth seeded Amercan now takes on Australian Lleyton Hewiit, with whom he has a 1-7 record.
Other winners today were Marat Safin (d. Robin Sordeling), Tommy Haas (d. Augustin Calleri) Ivo Karlovic (d. Max Mirnyi) and Radek Stepanek, who knocked out sixth seed Fernado Gonzalez in their second round encounter.
As well as great singles tennis this week, Montreal sees one of the best Doubles fields in recent years, with Roger Federer teaming up with compatriot Yves Allegro and Rafael Nadal partnering Lleyton Hewitt. Both teams won their respective first round matches today, with Federer and Allegro set to meet the number one team of the Bryan Brothers in the next round.
