The Court
posted Saturday Oct 07, 2006 12:38pm by Olga Ziegler

A tennis court is 78 feet / 23.8 meters long, 27 feet / 8.2 meters wide for singles play and 36 feet / 11 meters for doubles. The net must be 36 inches (91 centimeters) high at the center and 42 inches (107 centimeters) high at the net posts.

Court surfaces

Hard court - These all-weather courts provide a smooth, reliable bounce. But they can be hard on joints and muscles, so extra care with the footwear is needed here.

Synthetic surfaces - Indoor synthetic courts can be rolled out like carpets and rolled up after the game. Their speed varies.

Clay courts - clay courts are soft on joints and muscles, and the clay slows the ball, so the rallies are longer and slower.

Grass courts - Grass is tough surface to play on, it's very fast and the balls often zing off it in unexpected ways. You've also got to field plenty of low balls. Big serve is very useful here.
